Species: Chinense, Extreme heat, Rare

Belonging to the Capsicum Chinense species,Chocolate Apocalypse is one of the hoter varieties with fruity aroma.

Taste Profile

A super hot chilli with a nice fruity aroma. You get a little bit of the fruity flavour first, but the heat comes through quickly and stays around for quite a while.

Heat Level

Super Hot – 8/10
This one is seriously hot, so a little goes a long way.

Texture and Appearance

The pods have a rough and heavily wrinkled skin, which gives them that typical superhot look. They start green and ripen to a beautiful dark chocolate brown, sometimes with a deep burgundy colour.

The pods can vary a little in shape. Some are short and chunky while others are longer with a pointed end.

Size of Plant

The plant grows to around 1 metre tall and becomes quite bushy once established.

Culinary Uses

A great chilli for making hot sauces, chilli flakes and powders. It has plenty of heat, so you don’t need to use many pods to make a seriously hot sauce.

Growing and Care

Like most C. chinense varieties, Chocolate Apocalypse likes warm conditions and can take a little longer to germinate.

We normally start the seeds somewhere warm, around 26–30°C. Once the seedlings are established, give them plenty of light and warmth. They enjoy the sun, but some protection from very strong afternoon sun can help during the hottest part of summer.

Keep the soil well drained and don’t let the plants stay too wet.

Fun Facts

  • The colour is probably our favourite thing about this chilli. When fully ripe, the pods develop a really nice dark chocolate to burgundy colour.
  • The pods don’t all come out exactly the same shape either, which you can see when you pick a handful from the plant. Some are chunky, some more pointed, and all have that rough, wrinkled superhot appearance.
  • And despite having “Chocolate” in the name, there is definitely nothing mild about this one!
