“Growing instructions & How to germinate chilli seeds”
Growing chillies from seeds can be a fun and rewarding experience, especially with a little guidance. Here at The Hippy Seed Company (THSC), we want to help you succeed in growing your own chillies. Here’s a simple guide to get you started.
1. Start Early
Chilli seeds are slow to start but grow quickly later in the season. To ensure your chillies ripen by the end of the season, it’s best to start planting early, ideally indoors.
2. Warmth and Light
Chillies are tropical plants and need warmth and light to thrive. If you’re in a cooler climate, consider using a heated propagator to help your seeds germinate. Grow lights can also extend the length of the day for your seedlings, giving them the extra light they need to grow strong.

3. Choosing the Right Growing Medium
Using the right growing medium is crucial. We recommend using pre-formed Coir Jiffy pellets. Soak the pellets until they swell, then plant two seeds just below the surface of each pellet. If using pots, a 50/50 mix of coir and compost works well. Peat is not ideal for chillies as it can be too cold and wet.
4. Planting Seeds
Coir Jiffy Pellets: Soak the pellets, plant two seeds per pellet, and remove the weaker seedlings later.
Pots: Fill each pot with the coir and compost mix, firm it down, and soak it thoroughly. Place the seeds with some space between them, cover lightly with compost, and remember to label each pot.
5. Care and Maintenance
Keep the growing medium moist but not waterlogged. Chillies need consistent moisture, but too much water can harm them. As the seedlings grow, ensure they get plenty of light and warmth.
6. Transplanting
Once the seedlings are strong enough, you can transplant them into larger pots or your garden. Make sure to harden them off by gradually exposing them to outdoor conditions.
7. Variety Matters
Chinense chillies: These are the hottest chillies, including varieties like Carolina Reaper and Habanero. They need more care and a longer growing season. If you’re in a cooler climate, a greenhouse is recommended.
- Annuum chillies: Easier to grow and can thrive outside in sunny, sheltered spots. Varieties include Jalapeños and Cayenne.
- Other Species: Rocotos and Baccatum species like Aji Amarillo require special care but can be very rewarding to grow.
8. Experiment and Enjoy
Experiment with different growing media and methods to find what works best for you. Remember, growing chillies is not just about the end product but also about enjoying the process.
By following these tips, you’ll be well on your way to growing healthy, vibrant chilli plants. Happy gardening from all of us at The Hippy Seed Company!
