Growing Chili Plants Using Jiffy Pellets
Preparation of Jiffy Pellets:
- Container Selection: Place Jiffy pellets in a sturdy container or tray. For a practical approach, consider using an old muffin tray if children are involved. This setup helps to keep the pellets upright as they expand. Arrange the pellets flat in the container with some extra space to accommodate their expansion.
- Pellet Orientation: Note that Jiffy pellets have a solid bottom without identifying marks. Ensure that the pellets are positioned correctly with the solid side facing down.
- Watering: Add approximately 70 ml of water to each pellet. Using warm water will expedite the expansion process. As the pellets absorb water, they will expand up to seven times their original height. The expanding pellets will be held together by an organic netting-like material.
- Seed Placement: Once expanded, the top of the pellet will have a small hole where seeds can be placed. Large seeds should be planted approximately 6 mm (¼ inch) below the soil surface, while smaller seeds should be placed closer to the top. Ensure that the pellets remain moist to facilitate seed growth.
Tips & Tricks:
- Seed Quantity: Plant 4-6 chili seeds in each Jiffy pellet to optimize space and encourage faster germination.
- Transplanting Seedlings: When seedlings have developed three sets of leaves, gently separate them and transplant each into a larger pot.
- Root Growth: Jiffy Pellets, with their air pockets, are ideal for starting seeds or plant cuttings, allowing ample room for root growth. Unlike peat pots with harder sides and bottoms, these pellets are spongy and conducive to root development.
Using Jiffy Pellets for Transplanting:
- Potting Up: Jiffy Pellets are not designed for indefinite plant growth due to their small size. Once seedlings require more space, the expanded pellet can be placed whole into a larger pot. Add soil to the larger pot, place the Jiffy Pellet with the plant inside, and fill around the pellet with additional soil.
- Outdoor Planting: Jiffy Pellets can also be used for planting outdoors. The pellet can be planted whole, minimizing the risk of root shock. Simply dig a hole, place the pellet with the plant in it, and cover it with soil.
