Growing Instructions & How to Germinate Chilli Seeds

Important Information:

If you do not plan to sow the seeds within one month of receipt, we recommend transferring the chili seeds from their plastic bag into a paper envelope, such as a coin envelope. Store the envelope in a dry, dark place, such as a drawer.

Timing:

Spring is the optimal time to plant your chili seeds. Planting too early or too late may hinder germination.

Temperature:

Chilies thrive in warm conditions. For best results, maintain a constant soil temperature of 26-32°C. Suitable locations include a warm spot on top of the refrigerator or a sunny windowsill. We utilize a heat mat, a mini greenhouse, and a thermometer to achieve these conditions.

Germination Methods:

We recommend starting seeds in Jiffy Pellets, but pots or multi-cell seed trays can also be used. In our experience, seeds germinate faster when planted 3-4 per pellet. Create 3-4 holes in the Jiffy Pellet and place one seed in each hole. For detailed guidance, please refer to our germination videos on our YouTube Channel, “The Hippy Seed Company.” When using pots or seed trays, lightly cover the seeds with a basic seed-starting mix.

Moisture:

Keep the seed medium consistently moist throughout the germination process. A small mister (spray bottle) is preferable to direct watering. We recommend using Jiffy Pellets in a mini greenhouse or plastic container. For visual guidance and alternative methods, please visit: Germination Video.

Germination Time:

Germination typically occurs within 3 to 5 weeks. Note that some varieties may take longer to sprout.

Transplanting:

Once seedlings have developed two sets of leaves, they may be transplanted. It is permissible to let them grow larger before transplanting if desired. For Jiffy Pellets with multiple seedlings (3-4), gently separate the seedlings after removing the mesh. Keep newly transplanted seedlings out of direct sunlight for a few days.

Sunlight:

After transplanting, place seedlings in a shaded area initially. Although chilies require warmth, they do not tolerate full sun exposure. Shade cloths can be used to protect them from excessive sunlight.

Fertilizer:

Avoid using fertilizer until after the seedlings have been transplanted, as it may damage them. Fertilize chilies for potted plants approximately once a month (or every two weeks). We recommend using Rooster Booster, a slow-release fertilizer, or Seasol, but any fertilizer suitable for fruits and vegetables will suffice. Excessive fertilizer can harm plant roots.

Watering:

It is crucial to keep your chili plants adequately watered; ensure they do not dry out. In hot weather, watering twice daily is beneficial.
