Malawi Birds Eye Chilli

Capsicum Frutescens

Also known as Piri Piri or the African Birds Eye

The Malawi Birds Eye Chilli is Capsicum Frutescens and originates from Malawi in southeast Africa. There are many varieties of Birds Eyes chillies, and it should be noted that the African variety differs from the Thai and Indian varieties. This Birds Eyes chilli are also know as Peri Peri, which means ” pepper pepper” in Swahili. The plant grows well in a pot to about 50-60 cm in height and is very bushy.

The pods start off green and change to a fiery red colour, when they are fully mature. This variety is very easy to grow and furthermore a great producer of small thin chillies. The pods are approximately 4 cm in length by 1-1.5 cm wide. First the pods start off green and end up a bright red colour, when they are fully mature. An amazing looking plant full off upwards pointing chillies.

Can be used in any cooking as the neutral flavour and heat level makes it a great choice to ad some heat to your dish or pickle them so you have chillies for the whole year.

How to pickle your chillies:

Wash 500 grams of chillies and cut a litte slice in each pod.

Add 250 ml water, 250 ml white vinegar, 1 tbs of salt, 1 tbs of raw sugar, 1 tsp black peppercorns, 1 tsp coriander seeds and 3 bay leaves in to a pot and heat up till it boils.

Pack your chillies in jars and pour the hot vinegar spice mixture over the chilli and seal.

Check the liquid levels in the jars after a few weeks, as you may have to add more of the vinegar mixture.

 Flavour: Very neutral flavour

Heat level: 7/10

10-12 chilli seeds per pack
