Bhut Jolokia

‘Also know as the Ghost Pepper’

C. Chinense

Bhut Jolokia is also known by its nickname Ghost Pepper and originates from the Assam state of India.

For many years it was considered to be the world’s hottest chilli. Both Assamese growers and the Chile Pepper Institute found top heat levels around one million Scoville Heat Units (SHU). It is almost twice as hot as the previous record holder Red Savina.

It is still one of the hottest chillies in the world, but if you like it even hotter try the 7 Pod Peppers and Trinidad Scorpion Peppers. The SHU for Bhut Jolokia is one million.

The plant grows to about 1.5 meter in a pot, but will grow bigger if you put it in the ground. An amazing producer of elongated peppers that are 5 to 8.5 cm in length, 2.5 to 3 cm in diameter with an undulating surface. We noticed that fruit shape also seems to differ a bit. Fruits mature from green to bright red. It takes 120 days or more for red ripe pods (caution: the pods can already be very hot while still green).

Great for a hot sauce or some delicious spicy Indian food. One thing is for sure, it will spice up any meal.
