Aji Oro Rocoto

‘The hottest Rocoto with a sensational flavour’

C. Pubescens

The Aji Oro Rocoto is native to Bolivia and is the hottest C. Pubescens we have tried.

The plant grows really big in a pot to over 1.5 meter in height and if you plant it in the ground it will be huge. An absolute amazing producer of delicious warm yellow almost orange pods. First the pods start off green, then they turn yellow, and when they are ready to be pick they are almost orange.

We offer different types of Rocotos: Yellow Rocoto from Mexico, Locoto from Bolivia, Rocoto from Peru and Manzano Orange from Mexico.

The Pubescens has some very interesting characteristics:

  • The stems and leaves are hairy (Pubescens is Latin and means reach puberty, become hairy or botanically it means covered with fine short hair)
  • Contains more Dihydrocapsaicin than capsaicin resulting in a different burn.
  • The flowers have blue/violet petals
  • The seeds are black
  • The species is more resistant to cold than other species. They are adapted to 4-21 degrees Celsius

It is said the plant grows up to four-meters tall  and can live up to 15 years, which gives an almost tree-like appearance with age.

The pods are 5 cm tall and 5 cm wide, contain black seeds and are very thick walled.

Excellent for stuffing, pickling, making a paste, a sauce or chilli jam.

Flavour wise: Very juicy and sweet, plus very firm and thick in consistency

Heat level: First you get a burn back of the throat and thereafter the burn moves forward to the whole mouth. This variety is hot.

10-12 chilli seeds per pack
