Aji Limo
C. Chinense
Aji Limo is another rare chilli from Peru. It is a great looking plant and it grows to about a metre tall in a 30 cm pot. If you plant it in the ground, it would grow much bigger.
It’s a Capsicum Chinense variety and a sturdy plant that sort of umbrella out with masses of pods hanging underneath the canopy. The pods get to around 5-7 cm long and about 2-3 cm wide, go from a green to a bright red.
This chilli pepper is commonly used in Ceviche and other Peruvian cooking. Excellent in a salsa or in any chilli dishes. Especially fish dishes because of the Aji Limo gets a citrus-spicy flavour when it’s cooked.
All in all it is a great looking plant, a really good producer of chillies with an unusual flavour and an instant heat. The Aji Limo is worth growing and a bonus it keeps producing into the cooler months, so it has a long season.
Flavour wise: Crunchy with an explosion of a sour fruity type of flavour. The flavour stays for ages, would really go well with fish or chicken or anything that want a decent punch to.
Heat level: Hot. The heat hits pretty quick. A nice burn that surprises you.
